Silence is Golden

zipper_mouthHelloooo, is there anyone out there who isn’t checking his/her Facebook page, MySpacing, reading Tweets, LinkingIn, blogging, texting, YouTubing, or just in general, communicating with someone else every minute of the day? If so, I’d like to be your friend.

I can’t help but think there is something very precious getting lost in the mayhem out there, and that is…silence.  Yes, that state in which you are not emitting or receiving messages is called silence.  It is where your mind refreshes itself.  It is where creative thought emerges.  It is the time and space you give your mind to rest and renew.

You may be surprised to hear a marketer tout the benefits of silence, but it is something I strongly believe in.  I don’t think it’s possible to come up with fresh ideas or thoughtful strategies for our companies if we’re constantly consuming or spitting out messaging to the cyber crowds. Once in awhile, I encourage us all to turn off.  Disconnect our computers, ipods, blackberries, cell phones, fax machines, televisions, radios, dvd players, and all other noise-emitting devices. Let our minds wander and go where they may. For our personal and professional benefit, let’s allow ourselves the luxury of silence.
