Today's Marketing Cookie - Only Listen To Me

Today's Marketing Cookie - Only listen to fortune cookie, disregard all others..

"Only listen to fortune cookie, disregard all other fortune telling units."

Today's Marketing Cookie came from Rebecca Mead, the President of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Marketing Association. (You should follow her on Twitter: @capitolchick)

Last month, Rebecca had invited some of the smartest marketers from around the Greater Hartford area out to a special recruitment dinner. During the evening, Rebecca and her board members wanted to introduce these talented marketers to the AMA and ask them to consider accepting a leadership role in the chapter. As the "guest of honor", it was my pleasure to share the story of what we had accomplished in Boston and the many benefits I personally had received from my participation in the AMA. While I had met Rebecca previously, I hadn't fully recognized her dedication to her role as president - until that evening. Her passion and determination are as evident as ever, and spoke louder than anything I would say that evening. I left Connecticut feeling inspired and am thrilled to receive today's fortune from Rebecca.

Perhaps you should, "only listen to fortune cookie" as is suggested.  When I crack these cookies open every day, I try to write what I think the message can teach us about marketing. If I feel that I cannot teach us something, I then revert to writing what I've learned so far in my marketing career and you are left to your own devices to draw your own conclusions. Either way, these fortunes are quite simply a platform by which I present my opinion, the true value of which is yet to be appraised.

Today's cookie does not stop there. No. It also says to, "disregard all other fortune telling units". Well, this reiteration more clearly suggests that you ought to read your fortune cookie and accept the message at face value. You must ignore my early morning cookie ramblings. Clearly, my idea of twisting each fortune cookie message into a marketing message, misleads and distorts the intended meaning of each cookie, and therefore offends international cookie law! An offense that should be punishable by indefinite suspension of my literary license.

Is that what it means?

Nah. Probably not. I think it is supposed to say, "only listen to Marketing cookie!" and "Disregard all other fortune telling units... that aren't from Myles".  There's no one better suited to share my opinion and my experience - than me. You certainly have the prerogative to glean your own meaning from every cookie you encounter, but my Marketing Cookies are my own. Every fortune in Today's Marketing Cookies have been made my own, just as Rebecca has made the Hartford chapter her own. While I may have been a guest of honor in Hartford that evening, it was Rebecca's passion that spoke louder than any words I could have said.

So then, I ask YOU... What have you made your own???

Comments

Myles, It was a pleasure having you at our recruitment dinner. Our guests were very impressed with you and your story and it energized them to join us and help build a successful chapter here in Connecticut. Rebecca is a passionate leader and AMA is lucky to have her leading the CT chapter to new successes. Thank you!

Thank you for the kind words. It was a wonderful evening and with all the great talent that had been invited to join the team, I would say that the Connecticut chapter will be in very capable hands.
